Wow.
Originally a b-side on the Smokers single along with An Eye for an Eye, The Picture is a truly obscure choice as a song for Tom's gradually unfolding solo gig on Instagram. The original has keyboards, synth vocals as a backing instrument and includes some guitars from Chris, but underneath it's pretty much what you're listening to here. For me, The Picture is a perfect capture of who Editors were in 2007. Tom was still growing into his voice, there's a slightly downbeat nature to the lyrics but you can hear a desire for expansiveness in the music. With the An End Has a Start album, from which Smokers came, they were about to take a step away from the claustrophobia of The Back Room and graduate into not only bigger venues but songs with more breadth.
To hear Tom singing this now is such a treat, because I don't recall it having ever being performed live during Editors' lifespan so far. It's also a little weird because this was from a time when singles had b-sides, and music wasn't quite so "À la carte" in the way it's consumed.
