Editors Instagram - July 2017

"Just don't leave this old dog to go lame....."

July was the busiest month on the summer campaign, seeing the band playing 7 festivals in 3 different countries. It's also bore a sour taste of melancholia because there's only 5 shows remaining before it's all over, and they dive headlong back into the silent waters of preparing E6. I expect that the social media presence will reduce somewhat as they disappear to get things ready, so the time between now and September is all about enjoying them while we've still got them around.

This month was all also about continuing to road test the unreleased songs. It feels like we're past the awkward introductions phase, with Magazine, Hallelujah (So Low), Cold and having established themselves in the setlist very nicely. Such is the self-belief of the band in their most recent audio constructions that at two of their shows where they played shortened sets, they left all three new numbers in. A bold move when you're not playing to a partisan crowd.

As upbeat and pleasant as Cold sounds, it's still got those subversive observations from Mr Smith that if you're listening closely remove some of the sweet, mainstream  pop flavouring:-

"It's a lonely life, a long and lonely life..."
"Maybe time's the greatest healer, but baby everything will die"

M o o d c o r e.

There's a moment during Hallelujah (So Low) when they played Kendal Calling that manages to produce a shiver every time I listen to it. Just after the break for the handclaps and they all come back in, I don't know if it's Mr Williams' or Mr Lockey's guitar that feeds back really loudly, but it gives everything this aggressive extra kick that they then ride to the end of the track. As someone who has spent hours damaging my ears repeatedly listening to records like Upside Down by the Mary Chain, that sound was just perfect.

Also, all 5 Editors seem to be getting more loose when they play these songs, and to be at their most happily "in the moment" when delivering them. Well that won't do! What they need are several more endless touring campaigns to knock that foul positivity out of them. Team Editors, make it happen.

There was an interview at Lollapalooza with Justin and Elliott, where they dropped the news that there may be collaborators on E6 that we're not aware of yet. Does that mean non-Editors will be playing/singing on the record? Are they referring to the production side? At the same festival, there was an interview with Ed and Russell backstage which was very kindly translated from French to English by Hannah from the band's unofficial forum, which revealed that March next year is when information about the new album and single will be made public. If you're in the mood for counting then I'm sorry to say that it's 8 months away, but let's not forget that EdiBow did let it slip that a single track might be released prior to that. Assuming that she's correct and the plans haven't changed at all, the wait for new Editors material might not actually be as long as we think.  Unless, of course we're referring to Dream Dark as Your Heaven, which as we know is currently in the possession of a couple of lucky cats and nobody else. It's been six months since those two mythical 7" singles were made public, and it's my duty as an Editors completist/fanatic to never let that fact go. So I won't. Woe is me! Woe is you! Woe is everybody in the room!

And if 4 new songs in rotation wasn't enough, on the 15th of July the band posted a 15 second clip of themselves in the studio, featuring Mr Lockey playing guitar on another unknown composition. Stuff is most definitely going down, folks. For now, enjoy the 79 items in the zip file below which includes those lovely moments at Lollapalooza where Smith and Burrows were reunited, and where Edith deliberately distracted her beau during a photoshoot.
