Fortezza da Basso, Florence, Italy 25th July 2008

Up next is an absolutely sensational piece of audio wizardry by Inconnu, documenting an Editors show that I hadn't heard in full before now. It's a recording of their gig in Florence during the An End Has A Start campaign, and the quality is absolutely fantastic. In accordance with Inconnu's wishes, this show is being shared here in its original FLAC format and without any alterations. The only slight change I made is to the title of track 11 which was originally labelled as Spiders, but is in fact Banging Heads. Thank you very, very much for sharing your work with the world. It's awesome ;)

The setlist reveals some hidden gems that don't get played that often anymore, including the long lost b-side Banging Heads. There's also one of the full band versions of No Sound But The Wind. I say one of them because this really seems to have been a track that they worked out how to play best through testing it live. There's a few different takes available here at the Archive, and each one shows the song in a different stage of development. Some have different lyrics, some are just Mr Smith on the piano but precious few actually sound like the final completed full band studio recording. Here's a few others you might want to check out:-

I always loved the 2008 point in its evolution because of that shimmering sound behind everything as it starts out, where it's just Mr Lay's drums and this beautiful noise as an accompaniment. It's very reminiscent of the beginning of the live version of When Anger Shows, which is also included here. You can feel hints of the electronic ideas that would come to fruition during the recording of ITLAOTE starting to become more evident. I also love the way Tom sings "No sound but the Wind" late into the performance. NSBTW has such a schizophrenic history, fluctuating between acoustic and full band and it's one that I've always found really interesting. I wonder if, like the disagreements surrounding Walk the Fleet Road (detailed here) if any of the songwriting partners were ever truly 100% happy with either version? Enjoy the music ;)

Bonus Material - Bones (redux)
This is a clip of Bones that was shot from the audience of an Editors show in Florence on the 25th July 2008 by aerialzonbie. You can check out the original video here:-

Full credit to them for making this available at the time. While I was updating this post I fancied adding a little bit of extra flavour. So I decided to take the audio from Inconnu and rework the sound on aerialzombie's footage, which was a little bit sonically harsh. It should hopefully paint a better picture of what the night was like for those who were there. Plus I just love seeing this rare footage that is, at the time of writing, over a decade old. Hope you agree, thanks again aerialzombie for shooting the frames ;)
