Oxjam 1st October 2009 GaryUK Recording

Another outstanding bit of audio documentation from GaryUK for you all next, as we revisit Mr Smith and King Leetch performing in an Oxfam shop in Tooting, London as part of Oxjam in October 2009. Tom plays the acoustic guitars and Russell strokes the keys. Mr Lay was there (see video in bonus materials below), but not part of the set. The intimacy of this show has been captured here perfectly, highlighting the reduced volume of everything (audience and band included). Great work again Gary and thanks for making it available.

It's a rare thing that you get a full set of nothing but Editors acoustic numbers, which surely qualifies this as a very special occasion indeed. What makes it even more unusual is that is has a take of No Sound But The Wind with a set of completely different lyrics, some of which ended up falling by the wayside during the gradual reconstruction of the song. The benefit of revisiting this show a decade later is that we now know a little more about NSBTW and those words, specifically that the makers of the Twilight movie it was included in were the ones suggesting the changes. The song was due to be the penultimate song played on the night (see photo below taken by Mister J Photography), but out of tune guitars derailed the plans. So it got bumped up to being the set opener with Tom on piano. Those work-in-progress lyrics were:-
No Sound But the Wind - Alternate Lyrics
We can never go home
We no longer have one
I'll help you carry the load
I'll carry you in my arms
The kiss of the snow
The crescent moon above us
Our blood is cold, we're alone
But I'm warm with you

Help me to carry the fire
We will keep it alight, together
Help me to carry the fire
It will light up our way, forever

If I say shut your eyes,
If I say look away
Bury your face in my shoulder
Think of a birthday
The things you put in your head
They will stay there forever
Or blood is cold when I'm alone
But I'm warm with you

Help me to carry the fire
We will keep it alight, together
Help me to carry the fire
It will light up our way, forever
Help me to carry the fire
We will keep it alight, together
Now help me to carry the fire
It will light up our way, forever

If i say shut your eyes
If i say shut your eyes
Bury me in surprise
When I say shut your eyes

Help me to carry the fire
We will keep it alight, together
Help me to carry the fire
It will light up our way, forever

In addition to that we get to hear Distance from the Back Room, which is all electric in its recorded form, as well as an exemplary take on the normally spine-shaking You Are Fading. Russell's keys are a fine counterpoint for the usual sonic blast that makes this song so special live. Enjoy the music ;) x
