Little Noise Fragments, Union Chapel 16th November 2009

So this post gets "fragments" in the title because it's incomplete, and because the source material came from a few different places. If you can overlook those flaws, and take a "glimpse" over a "longing stare", you're in for a good time.

This was a show that the band did in support of mental health and learning disability charity Mencap, at Union Chapel in London on the 16th November 2009. As we know, the band have a long history of being involved with good causes, the more recent one being the ultra limited 300 unit pressing of Marching Orders, that was placed in various Oxfam shops around the country through their Gift Aid program.

It was an almost-acoustic affair, with only Chris's electric guitar breaking the theme, while King Leetch slid away from his bass to occupy the piano stool. The setting for this show means it has a slightly formal feel to it, and there's something devilish in seeing Mr Smith standing in a chapel saying "If there really was a god here, he'd have raised a hand by now". Delicious irony which, as we know from past experience, tastes like olives. He actually manages to screw the lyrics up on Papillon not once, but twice as he goes along but he deals with it like a total pro.

The set contains the old, old version of No Sound But The Wind with it's completely alternate lyrics, which are detailed in full here, and there's this great little moment during the intro to You Are Fading where someone in the crowd recognises it and just says "Yes!". Indeed ;)

Most of this was sourced from fan footage, some of which isn't online any more unfortunately. So I've uploaded it to mediafire to keep it alive a little longer. The MP3s also came from a mixture of fan footage and the 4 tracks that were televised, so the quality isn't soundboard. As a reminder of what went down, however, it'll do. I couldn't just file this stuff away forever because of its imperfections, after all.

Lastly, if you're a fan of Mr Urbanowicz as I most certainly am, this show will have you smiling and sighing nostalgically all at once. He's on the Rickenbacker and it's inspiring and heartbreaking to hear again, particularly at the end of Walk the Fleet Road. Then there's Bones. One of the best of the quieter versions of this track you'll ever have the pleasure of experiencing. You think I'm being overly dramatic, perhaps? Listen and make your own mind up. Enjoy the music, folks ;)
