ITLAOTE XFM Walkthrough 13th October 2009 (audio)

This is a chance to hear Tom and Ed give a track by track breakdown of the band's third album, In This Light and On This Evening with John Kennedy before XFM became Radio X. It's very, very interesting and I won't spoil it by saying why.  Suffice it to say it's full of lots of behind the scenes stuff regarding the inception and production of the songs, which if you're a fanboy or fangirl will be right up your street. There's an explanation of the direction they took when they recorded In This Light and on This Evening, and why it appeared to be such a departure in terms of its leanings into electronica. There's also the revelation that An End Has a Start was actually a very difficult album to construct because of the way they approached the songwriting.

I find it fascinating to hear about the input of Mr Urbanowicz, and how his own need to experiment helped In This Light... to find its own unique voice. Fast forward to the Sony press conference they did in November 2014 and Mr Smith's admission that he didn't like the way Walk the Fleet Road ended up, with the way that Chris hears music being cited as the reason. Tom felt that the keys towards the end of the track were unnecessary, and that it should have ended earlier. It demonstrates that distance and hindsight can alter everything, but also may hint at the differences and tensions between the two of them that gave birth to all those magical moments over the course of their first three records.

In keeping with the Archive's policy of not ripping the band off by releasing anything official for free, the songs themselves have been removed from the show leaving only the words.  It's over 50 minutes of editors heaven, enjoy the chat ;)
