Tom and Russell talk about Lullaby September 2007 (video)

Source material for this clip was pretty much as presented, I'm afraid,  as if we're watching it prior to a cataract operation. Apologies for that up front.

On Friday the 21st of September 2007, Jo Whiley broadcast a very special little cover version on her show. As part of Radio One's 40th birthday celebrations, a selection of artists provided their own renditions of popular tunes for a compilation album. The collection itself is, in my opinion anyway an awful lot of mouldy, pimply old cat poo which only serves to remind you that the original versions are usually the correct ones. Town Called Malice by McFly?

No.

That being said, track 3 on CD 2 is very interesting indeed. Note that they happen to share that particular disc not only with their old allies Maximo Park, but also with with Hard-Fi which, if you know your Editors history, will cause a little smile for sure) :-

Lullaby's status as an officially released song means I won't be sharing it here, but I do have a brief little video of Tom and Russell explaining it as their choice of track to cover. Originally recorded by the absolutely wonderful Cure as part of their 1989 Disintegration album, Lullaby is a spooky little number with an even spookier video. As a choice for the band to cover, it seemed like a given and I actually really like their take on it. What makes it even more appropriate as a song choice is it's subversive nature as a pop song; addressing the fear of dying in your sleep in a track that gets you an appearance on Top of the Pops and into the living room of millions of unsuspecting people. Also, Mr Smith is a big fan of The Cure, something which was evident in an interview he gave to Spin magazine in 2011, when explaining his thinking behind recording a track with Japanese Popstars for their Controlling Your Allegiance record:-

"It puts me on an album with Robert Smith"

As I mentioned earlier, Jo Whiley gave the track its first public airing on her radio show on the 21st of September, and then invited listeners to text in with their opinions. Lullaby then went on to become a part of Editors' set during the AEHAS touring campaign. If you wanted to hear some of those performances, you can check out the following posts here at the Archive:-

Blackpool Empress Ballroom 28 Feb 2008
Birmingham Indoor Arena - February 29 2008

Leipzig 19th March 2008
Darmstadt Radio Broadcast 21st March 2008

As an interesting footnote to this story, around the time of this recording Tom gave an interview to website culturedeluxe, stating his DESIRE!!!!!! (sorry, couldn't resist) to cover a song by.........

"It'd be great to do 'Suspicious Minds' or 'In the Ghetto'. The live version of 'Suspicious Minds' is one of the most phenomenal live recordings ever been to tape. In the video his performance is unbelievable - it's just proper rock 'n' roll. Big. In your face. Power!"

Alas, the idea never came to fruition but isn't it wonderful to imagine a larger, more sweaty Tom in a white jump-suit violently shaking his hips while belting out Suspicious Minds at an Editors gig, as someone hands him towels to mop his fevered brow? Towels that he then throws to the ladies in the audience with a cheeky grin. The mind boggles. Anyway, to drift back towards the point of this post, the interview with Tom and Russell regarding Lullaby is right here:-

brought to you with lots and lots of lemming-love :) x
