Hurricane June 2016 - Voices from a show that never was

Courtesy of fellow Editors fan, Miloriblau (thank you!), here's something a little bit odd for you all. At the time these videos were recorded, everyone involved believed there would be a show afterwards, with the interviewees thinking they'd be playing it. As it turned out the gig in question, Hurricane Festival, was cancelled due to the some seriously evil European weather. So with no performances or music to enjoy, what we're left with is a very brief chat with Mr Smith and a much longer interview with Mr Lay and Mr Williams.
Something to bear in mind here is that what we see of Tom's interview is a tiny shard of something much bigger, which wasn't aired, and so it's difficult to gauge out of its proper context. Also, I could be totally off the mark here but I would imagine that what he's saying is fueled by a certain amount of road fatigue, given that he was nearing the end of a gruelling campaign surrounding the In Dream album that had been littered with all kinds of weirdness. Then, of course, there's also the totally understandable disappointment at the voting fiasco here in the UK, on over whether or not to leave Europe at that time.

The topics covered in the 24 seconds of airtime he was given are the state of music today and that vote. There's just a terrible an air of negativity and sadness over everything, really. While I agree entirely with the Brexit sentiments, the first answers given were the reason for the little disclaimer above. I think that the repetitive, treadmill nature of the touring and promo have taken the shine off things a little, but hopefully it will come back once he's had a chance to get back to his life and not being a touring Editor. I still remember way back before In Dream was done and they were in Scotland. It was so nice to see them enjoying being a band again after the season in purgatory that was the press obligations surrounding The Weight of Your Love. This situation was undeniably improved later by the band deciding not to be a as full-on with their touring obligations, and instead adopting a schedule that allowed for time off to recuperate.

He questions the ability to achieve any kind of true originality, and while it's the case that there's only a finite number of musical notes and combinations you can arrange them into, every so often you hit on something that will still have a profound effect on you in spite of these limitations. As a fan, and speaking purely for myself, each Editors album is something new and original, which is why it's so difficult to determine what the hell it will sound like before you hear it.

If you live long enough you will undoubtedly have experienced music that is similar to its ancestry, but that doesn't diminish it's creative value as a new piece of work. Plus, the one thing we shouldn't overlook is that there are always people who are just finding music for the first time, new generations of music fans who have no historical reference points and may very well be blown away by what they're hearing. Really finding a band can change your life, as it did mine when I first saw Editors play in 2006. There are people who caught the proper tours or the festival mini-campaign who will have had their eyes opened to Editors as a result, and to whom they now mean as much as they do to me. And that's awesome.
The interview with Mr Lay and Mr Williams is much longer and slightly lighter in mood overall, although it's a little sad to hear them talking so hopefully about playing the gig, unaware that nature has other plans.... Brexit is up for discussion again, and I don't remember the band being this overtly political. They've always been vocal in their support for charity causes such as Water Aid, Burma Relief or the campaign to halt climate change, but this really appears to have yanked on a nerve. It's understandable, because the outcome of that vote doesn't reflect how a lot of us are feeling about being a part of Europe. Check them out using the links below :-
