Picture "borrowed" by kind permission of N Pickles 2006 (thank you!)
Every so often, fate has a weird way of working in your life. I attended this gig and saw my first ever Editors show. Little did I know, that there was a photographer taking snaps down the front who I'd be contacting out of the blue 5 years later to ask if I could use one of his pictures. Happily, he's agreed and so this post gets to look a little bit cooler. The above shot, and all the ones you simply have to check out from that fateful evening are by a very talented snapper called Nick. Check out the rest of his Newcastle gig photos by following this link, they're really good:-
and you can view his profile here:-
So, this is the starting point that leads us (eventually) to you reading this blog. I have to be careful not to wax lyrical too much here because this could turn into a very, very long post indeed where I witter on endlessly about the effect this little gig at a local venue had on me. I'll show some restraint, I promise :)
Simply put, I'd heard Editors on the radio and read a couple of good reviews of their live show. I saw that they were playing in Newcastle, and so I decided to go along and check them out. I wanted to see this for myself, you might say. I bought my ticket and thought no more about it until the night of the show when I went into Newcastle.
I've said before on the blog that Editors are a band that you might like when you hear their recorded output, but that only really make sense when you see them live. This was exactly the case on this occasion. I was totally blown away by what I saw. I only recognised a couple of tunes, but I liked what I heard of the unfamiliar ones. I remember thinking that the frontman was in the throes of some kind of possession, full of energy that was bouncing him all around the front of the stage. All the elements for a good show were in place; the loud guitars frenetic drumming and all sliding along on low-slung bass lines.
My attention was held for all 15 songs and then at the very end, Tom stood right at the lip of the stage and saluted the crowd, before being bear-hugged and carried off by Chris. Job well and truly done and another stranger converted to the cause. I joined their official forum shortly after and now, almost 6 years later, I'm doing my damndest to turn as many people as I can on to this amazing little band.
So it is with great pleasure that I share this audience recording from the night. If you're the kind soul who taped it then I apologise for not naming you here, my filing system was still in its infancy in 2006 and so I don't have any more details other than the setlist. The audio isn't up to soundboard quality but in terms of what this show means to me personally, I can overlook that and I hope you can too. It's being shared in its original FLAC form, and you can check it out below:-
