Lowlands August 17th 2008 (audio/video)

Just over a week ago some long time friends of the Archive,  EditorsDaily, decided to hang 'em up and move on to other things after 5 years in the trenches of Editors Fandom. Really sad to see you folks jumping off the train but it was a pleasure sharing cyberspace with you. Whatever's next, I hope life is good for you........ ;)

2008 saw a similar set to the one they did the year before, only this one is a little more streamlined with Weight of the World and Lights being left off the running order. The mix of When Anger Shows seems to bring out some hidden aspects of the song. I'm listening to it with headphones on as I type and I can hear little things here and there that I wasn't aware of during other live takes. Of course, the more obvious one is where Mr Smith yelps between verses like Morrissey during the song Barbarism Begins at Home. On a side note, go and check out The Smiths if you haven't heard them. Your life will be better for it.

Smokers here is a definite rival for the "best ever performance" award that I think they already achieved at Oxegen a month earlier. It's close, but I still think the one at Oxegen gets the gold.

What makes this show extra special is what I believe to be the first ever public airing of A Life as a Ghost, in a very shortened form. This was a year before ITLAOTE came out and at this stage we hadn't heard the song at all, but this gave a brief showcase for it. You can tell just how new it was by the crowd's slightly subdued reaction to it, in a collective expression of "what the hell was that?". Not that what you hear resembles the finished item in any way at all, and is probably closer to a very basic demo version that began life on Mr Smith's piano. So it gave nothing away other than those lyrics, which were very intriguing at the time. Dance fucker, dance. Well indeed.

There's some quality interactions with the crowd from Tom which makes you wonder that, as far as intros go, has there ever been a better one to Bullets than this:-

"We've been looking forward to this evening for a while now. So it's good to see you in good shape and good form on a sunday night, after three days on the piss."

I think not.

There's bonus material in the form of a video of A Life as a Ghost (detail), as well as that explosive performance of Smokers. There's also a FaceCulture interview which sees King Leetch being stalked by a large plant. If you thought zombies were a threat, beware the potted dead...
