DVD Megapost #1 - Pinkpop 2006

Editors Pinkpop 2006 is an energetic performance that's full of little flashes of brilliance which make for a really enjoyable viewing experience. Here are some highlights :-

  • The way Tom casually tosses his guitar into the wings during Bones
  • The microphone abuse during that same number
  • Ed's drumming
  • Ex-forum members in the crowd shots right up the front, singing back at the band from the barrier
  • A glorious, monumentally sloppy guitar solo from Chris during You Are Fading
  • The change in Tom's guitar sound when he stamps the effects pedal during the chorus of Munich
  • A continuation of their still never fully explained public disdain for the Red Hot Chili Peppers before Fingers
Trivia fans will note that The Weight of the World has an extended intro from Ed and if you've listened to it repeatedly, you'll be able to spot all the parts that hadn't quite settled into the final version. I'm thinking of the way Chris' guitar actually dives to the lower notes as the chorus approaches on record, rather than waiting until Tom starts singing here. There's also the sight of Tom sitting behind his Roland Juno-D as opposed to a full sized piano at later shows. He was actually a lot safer back in he early days, because there's no way in hell that he'd be attempting to climb on top of that unsteady piece of kit.

This could purely be something that I'm seeing, but if you watch the entire 55 minute set you'll be able to spot a subtle change in Mr Smith's behaviour. At the very beginning he's all bendy arms and nervous tics, seemingly possessed by an abundance of energy that he's desperately trying to keep control of. As the show progresses, he seems to relax a lot more, almost as if he's experienced some kind of adrenaline-dump which flattens him out to a respectable level so he can play a little looser? As I said, that could just be me but he just seems to get more calm as the set goes on.

Enjoy the music ;)
