Way before the clinical-sounding precision beats and electronics of the 6 piece Blank Mass era of the band, Editors were simply 4 friends who met at university playing music regularly while they worked day jobs. The results were gigs like this one. There's an arresting mixture here of melody, noise, youthful passion and jittery enthusiasm which accompanied Editors' early tours. If their longevity has been a slow process of musical maturation, then this is when they were still at their most raw.
This show was another milestone in Editors' history, as they played their first ever German show at the "Introducing Festival". The proficiency in mastering their compositions was clearly still evolving, as well as occasional battles with technology but, for me anyway, it only adds to the excitement of the "live experience". They were ragged as all hell in the early days, which was a guarantee that you weren't going to get a facsimile of the cleaner sounding studio versions of songs making up the set. I have no problem with that at all.
On video, there's a brief introduction from Tom and Chris followed by Fingers in the Factories. Then there's a small interview followed by a performance of Camera. Even from this small sample, you can see the difference between Tom on stage and when he's not there. In terms of degrees of control, one was clearly more settled than the other and it's something that has continued to the present day. So visually, there's not a lot to see. However...
