Back to the 29th of April in 2005, and Editors are playing the "London Calling" festival at the Paradiso in Amsterdam. As Tom mentions during the set this was the first time that the band had played abroad, a significant moment in Editors' history. The thing about the shows from the
Back Room campaign, and even the ones from the
AEHAS period, is that they possess an aggression and edge that only comes from youth, fear and self-belief in the music. The intensity hasn't diminished as they've gone on, it's just been harnessed more wisely and released at a more steady rate. Here, it feels like they've been told it's the last time they'll be allowed to pick up their instruments and to try and go out strong. There's almost seems to be a shared awareness that this is one of those "first impression" occasions, and the attacking nature of the performance is increased accordingly.
The audience is up close and personal, so close that they actually have to walk offstage through them at the end of the set. The running order is made up entirely of tracks from the
Back Room which, in April of 2005 wasn't even released. Time surely does move quickly, doesn't it? Enjoy the music ;)
