August was the busiest touring month for the band this year, as they continued to frequent some of the remaining summer festivals. Unfortunately, their engagement in Bulgaria was cancelled with the organisers saying it would return next year. There was a missing person incident in Portugal as Ben didn't appear on stage at Festival de Crato, but made his way back shortly afterwards. Curious.
Elliott is now officially an entrepreneur, as he and his associates managed to raise the necessary funding to realise their dream of opening a ramen spot in Manchester by the end of the month. As a group, Editors have never really seemed to be about using building empires, in the ways that a band like U2 have in the past. Upon achievement of these financial goals, however, the same can no longer be said for its individual participants. Well done, Mr Williams. I hope this goes on to do great things for you and that your quest for the perfect noodle soup continues.
There's a gig booked for Smith and Burrows in support of Rush Skate Park in September, and they have Edith Bowman spinning discs as part of the evening. There's nothing else on the public diary for the pair beyond that, but I suspect that will change forthwith. Razorlight are off the road, Editors are about to go on hiatus, christmas is crawling towards us again (When the Thames Froze) so you could take all of this as some sort of devine signalling. The guiding hand of destiny is intervening in ways that should make it impossible for them to resist the urge to go mobile. Plus, they're owed a tour for the last album AND a check of the wristwatch indicates that it's about time for "Pure Pop Tom" to make another appearance.
When Editors were at their most fractured in 2011, literally 4 months before Chris was bid farewell in the most final way possible, Funny Looking Angels came out. I do remember Tom saying in interviews back then that the change of songwriting style really helped to navigate everything that was going on in his day-job band. A nice counterbalance to the sometimes weighty feel of Editors' music. Mr Smith's creative directions vary wildly depending on who he writes with. If it's with Chris, then he's in the corner with the wasp sting in his throat. Replace that partner in composition with Andy, and he gets to attend a calypso party for pirates. He deserves some of that pure pop joy, they both do.
Until September...
