September 2023 contained some subtle transitions, the most impactful one being that Editors as a live act would now officially appear to be in a state of dormancy. It's a sentiment that was amplified by Ed, who posted an Instagram story describing being en route to the last two shows of a "life affirming summer". Those gigs were in Italy on the 2nd and 3rd of September respectively, with no new engagements for the band until next year on the 8th of March when they play the Sportpaleis in Antwerp.
Never one to stand still, Tom once more committed himself to the process of Pop Therapy, and the recuperative benefits it provides, as Smith and Burrows reformed. They played a gig in support of Friends of Rush Skatepark on the 8th September, with Edith Bowman on the decks. This could have been a one-off event, but then as the month progressed the pair shared photos of themselves recording with Tim Baxter, which seems to suggest that plans are being formed. Conventional music business protocol would dictate that if they are recording new music, there will be an accompanying live appearance or two in order to showcase it. Covid is not the socially destructive force it once was (even though it is still very much a malevolent, low-key accompaniment in all of our lives), and so those restrictions that surrounded Smith and Burrows' second album release have dissolved. Editors and Razorlight are temporarily offline, so opportunity is undoubtedly calling. Providing the alure of civilian life is somehow successfully abated.
Editors' label PIAS turns 40 this year, and in celebration of the event they're releasing a limited clear vinyl edition of The Back Room. It should be arriving at the beginning of November and all the details you need on how to order it are available using this link.
New Wave Ramen, Elliott's business venture which met its fundraising goals last month opened its doors to the public in September. As well as that project, he also took some time to DJ again on the 23rd of September with Russell at Vittoria Park.
I'm getting ahead of myself by a month, but a release date for Justin Lockey's writing project has finally been announced after about 5 years in development. It was, strictly speaking, an October announcement but you can check out the details here. There's something very satisfying about this being called The Salvation, given Justin's prominent production duties on the In Dream album that features a song which is tenuously close to that title.
I'll be back when October ends...
