Open'er Festival 28th June 2023 (Antyradio Broadcast)

The YouTube version posted here is Hannah's recording of Antyradio's Open'er Festival broadcast which featured the full set by Editors, 28th June 2023. Huge thanks to her for once more employing her terrifyingly accurate radar and finding this. The MP3s that I'm making available for it at the Archive were taken from a different recording provided by another fan, and we have their father to thank for capturing it. Yes, that's right. We're involving family members in this madness now. First it starts with one person who hears the music and becomes sympathetic to the cause, who then subsequently goes on to convince their relatives to join (and start taping things), and pretty soon you have the beginnings of a worldwide cult centred around a charismatic goth band. If you were to ask Editors themselves, I'm sure they'd tell you that it's been the plan all along. It's a matter of time before we're all living together in a compound, eating lentils and listening to Joy Division all day in preparation for The Great Reckoning...

Thank you Maciek, and thank you for the assistance Waldek. ;)

Editors at Open'er 2023 is another entry into the growing list of great shows they've played lately, seemingly having hit a plateau where they can consistently go out onto a stage and present their music in the most effective way possible. That's not to say there weren't some pockets of turbulence during this flight. Check out AEHAS, Karma Climb, Ocean of Night for some "deviations" from normal service. Karma Climb actually has a first verse here that is partially indecipherable, which is hilarious given the lyrical confusion that song caused when it first appeared (wait, was that "God is a carpet in a field"?).

As I've said before, if I wanted a faithful reproduction of the studio creations I'd listen to the albums. I don't claim this to be the case in every genre of music, but live mistakes ground you as a listener and make you more engaged, in my opinion. They keep you alert and focused, making it a more interactive experience. Now, if they happened during a 1 hour deep house mix where music is supposed to blend seamlessly, on the other hand, that would break your concentration and probably make you wear a frown big enough to land an aircraft on.

As ever, this professionally mixed broadcast has brought some elements to the fore that were perhaps always there,  but may have otherwise gotten obscured in the typhoon of noise created by the 6 people on stage. The percussion at Open'er sounds both increased in presence and more aggressive. As an example, listen to the hand-clap section of Hallelujah. It doesn't resemble hands being repeatedly brought together, sounding more like the police trying to break your front door in. I also like the really quiet, smooth way that song starts off with minimal crowd noise. I don't know if it's Elliott or BM's strings but they create a lovely crescendo after the "Bones, starved of flesh" section of Bones. Racing Rats has been maturing into something quite special lately. As a fan of noise in my music I love the introduction here, but it's the general form of the song that strikes me now. It's so much more full-on than it was a few years ago. Maybe it's just the mechanics of six people playing it rather than four, or perhaps it was always just a composition that was always destined to really come into its own the further away it got from its inception? Aside from the reason, it sounded great here.

Trivia enthusiasts will be interested to know that this gig happened exactly 10 years to the day after the release of The Weight of Your Love. They played Open'er a month after TWOYL came out in July 2013 and you can watch and listen to that show here:-

And if you want even more Open'er related trivia, when they appeared at the festival in 2008 Chris actually took to the microphone and asked the crowd how they were...in Polish. A truly rare event. Don't believe me? I have audio receipts:-

Enjoy the music ;)

There's always a disclaimer when it comes to radio broadcasts. The station will pepper the show with idents to keep those pesky bootleggers away, so be prepared for some random announcements throughout.
