With even the most casual of glances, you'll quickly see that July's collection of social media fragments has a certain theme. They are the lingering effects resulting from Editors playing what may have been one of their best live shows, let alone at a festival, when they briefly claimed ownership of a small part of Belgium from a stage at Werchter. Even more interesting than that, was that the band announced another show in that region of the world, at Sportpaleis in Antwerp on the 8th of March next year.
If there's something that I'm unashamedly guilty of doing, it's speculating about Editors' plans. The quality and accuracy of that speculation is often...tragically inadequate (see my conviction that the live duet with La Goswell would happen) True to form, I have a theory about the potential significance of that March date in Belgium, and if you've got nothing better to do...
EBM was released in September of 2022, and by the time we get to March 2024 about 18 months will have elapsed. Typically, the promotional cycle for an album by a band is about that long, usually before they disappear to prepare the next record. All of the band's first three albums followed this pattern, with a gap of about 2 years between each. If you look back, you'll see that the biggest bouts of public inactivity between Editors releasing long-playing records were the product of some kind of aberration, be it the situation with Chris or the more global disaster of covid.
My theory then, is that the date at Sportpaleis could be the final stop on the EBM campaign, and that they chose Belgium specifically because they know they will end up with a party to put that album's tenure to bed on a high. Further to that, I think that it's possible that the June trip to Werchter is what made their minds up. Belgium loves Editors, of that we should be in no doubt. As for the theory, well, it really is just a theory and as always I'm prepared to be wrong.
In other news, Elliott has taken one of his many passions and is going to turn it into a business. Not content with being an electronic artist in his own right, a DJ and one sixth of popular semi-industrial band The Snowfield Pilots, he's part of a new Ramen shop and bar. Elliott has dabbled in the seedy world of Ramen porn for years, having posted saucy NSFW snaps of various dishes on his instagram profile. Now he's demonstrating his enthusiasm for the dish in the most definite way you can; by investing in something which will share with others what it was that got him hooked. The spot will be in Manchester on Tib Lane, will be called New Wave Ramen, and if you're interested in getting behind this and offering some support there's a Kickstarter page available here.
