Editors Instagram - June 2020

June has been as quiet as you'd expect it to be, given the pandemically-induced coma we've all been in. There's no new Editors revelations to bring you, but there was a welcome return for Smith and Burrows who decided to let you unwrap their irregularly timed christmas present just a few months early. 6 months early, to be precise. Their new single All the Best Moves is available to watch here. They also managed to pull off making a video for the song, which features our normally terribly despondent Editors frontman expanding on the shapes he threw in the promo for Magazine. All while wearing shorts, no less. Impressive. For me, Smith and Burrows acts as confirmation that Tom has always been a pure-pop songwriter at heart, and it's the company he keeps that either amplifies or tempers that instinct during the process of his ideas becoming fully formed compositions. Yet I also believe that the pendulum has to swing back the other way towards the darker tones in Editors in order for that artistic itch to be fully scratched.

There were a couple of instances of reflection in June for fans lamenting the cancelled dates on the Black Gold tour. It's a tragedy that any were nuked at all, but there were two in June that really stood out as opportunities that hurt to have been missed; Glastonbury on the 24th and then Zuiderpark on the 27th. In the absence of the real thing, you can check out some old Glastonbury appearances by Editors here at the Archive by using these links:-

As for the other show mentioned,  KinkFM were on hand to baffle and perplex Editors fans around the world with a premise so convoluted, Hannah had to explain it to me via DM on twitter.

Had it happened, Zuiderpark 2020 was going to be a big show and so rather than have it pass by without a commemoration of any sort, KinkFM got metaphysical on our asses. When I first listened in, it sounded like they had rebroadcast an interview with Tom from last year. The way he was talking, about how things had been going on the tour so far etc. Not so. KinkFM had enlisted De Staat and Editors in a little subterfuge. The idea was to completely suspend the current reality we occupy have both bands interviewed...as if they were about to go onstage at Zuiderpark. The fact that the gig was non-existent was irrelevant, as this was all an exercise in role playing by both bands. After the chat with Tom they played Editors set from Down the Rabbit Hole 2019 which only served to make everything even more confusing, and hence my assumption that what I heard was an interview that had happened back then.

I'd like to believe that KinkFM went full method-acting and flew Tom over to the Netherlands, placed him in the empty backstage area of Zuiderpark and then overdubbed some crowd noise, just to make the whole experience authentic before they interviewed him. Using deductive reasoning, however, I suspect that they simply called him at home and asked him to pay along with the ruse.

A few days later, Virgin Radio did something similar where they played a session that the band recorded last October for the Chris Evans Show. So while we can legitimately mourn the lack of Editors activity right now, we still have good folks like KinkFM and Virgin who are doing their part to give fans a little something to take the edge of that pain. As much as I may joke about it, the appreciation for the gesture is very real.

Other than that there's very little else to report. The zip file this month is lightweight but there was some lovely footage of Tom and Fraggle Burrows on a trampoline, as well as Elliott engaging his inner Vangelis. It'll all make sense when you download.
