Dermot O'Leary Show 22nd February 2020

Within one week of this broadcast, the band will be making a brief stop to play the homecoming part of the Black Gold greatest hits tour. Luckily for us, they were available to do some media while they were in the locale and the result is this acoustic session for Dermot O'Leary. I don't want to bring the downer vibes to this, but I have to confess it was actually painful to hear Ice Ice Baby by Vanilla Ice again just before Editors were on. Apparently we have Russell to thank for that as it's his favourite Karaoke song. It hurt me. Word to your mother.

The session starts with some chatter about the history of the band and how things have changed as Editors have progressed over time. What was immediately apparent was that the entire band were in the room, which I'm pretty sure hasn't happened before on Dermot's show. There's another first in Russell playing the acoustic bass for a set, as he normally slides onto keyboard duties for these things. Always breaking new ground, this band. It had me in mind of Simon Gallup when he took part in The Cure's MTV Unplugged session, how he still managed to get that full sound without electric assistance.

The band are asked which songs they enjoy playing live the most, and it's fun to hear that Ed's favourite Editors song to play live is Formaldehyde, given that it was his B52's style drumming that unlocked that song from the jail of incomplete Editors tracks way back when.

Musically, they really did lean into the Greatest Hits vibe by playing two of their most popular tracks in Munich and Papillon. Enjoy ;)
