Although
this was broadcast this evening, 24th November 2019 I believe it was
actually recorded over three weeks ago when Tom, Justin and Elliott were
in Poland. It was a part of their acoustic promotional mini-tout saw
them land in the company of Mateusz Tomaszuk for his Off Control show.
This is a great interview, mainly because Mateusz came prepared and engaged, having devoted a lot of thought to the subject matter and the direction of the chat. It makes it a lot more fun to listen to than the standard questions they were hit with on this campaign. "Why call the album Black Gold?" or "Does it really feel like 15 years?".
There's none of that here.
It even includes a short debate about the merits of time travel, and the relevance of ironic music listening. Yeah. It has little moments that occur all too infrequently, probably due to the formality and unfamiliarity of the situation, where the band get loose enough to start chatting among themselves and riffing off each other. Well done, Mateusz. As someone who is neck-deep in Editors quicksand I've seen my fair share of crap interviews with the band, and it only makes me appreciate the good ones like this all the more. Keep on keeping on.
What did we learn? Upside Down has no connection with the TV show "Stranger Things", and may share more of an affinity with the song of the same name by Diana Ross. Not a bad thing, as it's an excellent track. It was written by Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards, for goodness' sake! Go listen.
We also hear again that while there are tentative plans for a new album, but nothing has been started as yet. Lest we forget, there's a new Smith and Burrows album to be released and promoted first. Tom does reiterate that he'll be taking some time to be a civilian again when he begins writing new Editors material at home, whenever that process starts.
All in all, this is a really enjoyable 16 minutes ;)
brought to you with lots and lots of lemming-love ;) x
