Up next is another gig from the AEHAS campaign. In actual fact, this was only the fifth date on that tour which began in Warrington on the 22nd May 2007. The newness of the songs means that the band were still becoming accustomed to presenting it to an audience, and the crowd were still gauging their reactions to them. That's a possible explanation for why the Back Room tracks are all received as rapturously as they are; the extensive touring for that album has tattooed it into fan memory by this point so everyone can clap and sing along. Check out the crowd accompanying Chris' guitar line during All Sparks, or Tom when he's singing "I wanted to see this for myself" during Fall. The new tracks aren't familiar enough to have an established response which is why during Racing Rats, for example, they start clapping on the first beat rather than every second. It means that their tempo is much faster than the actual track, and you can hear everyone fall away when Tom starts singing. Given time, we'd all catch up.
Also of note during that number is the "Come on now" breakdown section, where all 4 Editors manage to make this combined noise that would have had Slowdive nodding in approval. It reminds me of parts of Morningrise by that band (which is also one of my favourite tunes by them).
The Dublin set is another reminder of how lucky this band are to have a solid drum and bass section intact. I've always felt there was a juxtaposition between the regular, dependable consistency of Russell's bass lines and Ed's drumming and the slightly looser playing by Chris and Tom. Mr Smith in his own performances can often go a little bit off script, and Chris has that wonderfully warped jagged guitar sound. It all works together so well, with one half complimenting the other. Enjoy the music ;)
