19 Versions of Munich 2006

Up next is a rarity that will surely test your level of fandom, and give you a good indicator of how lost in this gloomy Editors forest you actually are. When Munich was re-released as a single in January 2006, the label put together some promotional catnip in the form of this collection of live recordings of that song. That's the artwork that accompanied it above. The item was entirely digital, and what you got were 19 versions taken from their time spent supporting Franz Ferdinand on the UK leg of their arena tour in November, as well as their own sold-out Barfly gigs during December 2005 when they took The Kooks and Kubichek out on the road. Chronologically speaking I'm pretty sure there's a gap here, in that I think there's a show where Munich either wasn't taped or just wasn't included at Dublin on the 18th November 2005.

Now the casual/rational fans among you will probably be asking yourselves if you really need multiple live takes of the same track? Whereas those who operate on the same level of Editors-based insanity that I do (dare I mention the condom tins again?), will either have this in their collection or already be cheerfully downloading.  I concede to the more level-headed visitors to the Archive that you're right, this is essentially the same song played over and over. In my defence I would say this; aside from the fact that it's Editors memorabilia and therefore undeniably magnetic to those whose are predisposed to their music, if you're an enthusiast of the details then you'll be able to pick up on the minute differences between each rendition. Whether it's in the way each individual instrument is played or the surreal comedy moments during a couple of tracks, with Mr Smith's introductions taking a turn for the wacky. More than that, this is a piece of the band's history where they occupied a middle ground of outgrowing and graduating from the little gig circuit but not quite breathing that rare air that Franz Ferdinand were in.

Yet.

They would of course go on to play those and even bigger locations later on, but I smile to myself when I see Alexandra Palace on this list. In 2005 they were still a group that were finding their identity, but three years later the time came for Editors to contemplate playing to larger audiences. In Spring 2008 they booked a mini tour of larger capacity halls to test of the band's pulling power and if you want to know how it worked out, full details are here.

Before I go, if you're in the mood for torturing yourself take a second to think about this; if Munich was recorded from the soundboard at each of these shows then it's not impossible to conclude that part of or indeed the entirety of the rest of the gig may have been taped too. If that's the case, there may well be 19 Editors concerts that we haven't heard yet lonely and languishing in a record company vault. Like I said, torture. Enjoy Munich (x19).
