Blog interlude #1 - Peculiar Editors merchandise

Welcome to what will be an occasional series of brief pauses to check out some wonderful weirdness connected to our favourite band, Editors. Future episodes will look at such strange events as "When Ed got Simpsonised", and "When Chris met wrestling superman The Rock courtesy of Edith Bowman's radio show". No, really...

On the 30th of November 2007, "Company Magazine" here in the UK offered a free gift in the form of a condom tin, that sported designs by various celebs and music bods. Danni Minogue designed one, as did Kate Nash and Alexa Chung. The aim was to promote the idea of more young ladies, who are the chief readership of the magazine, carrying condoms and practicing safe sex.  The tins appeared on the front of the particular issue of Company, and Editors' contribution was a simple white background with the lyrics "You don't need this disease" (in red ) taken from the song Bullets. Succinct and to the point.

Being a fanboy geek, I of course bought several copies of the magazine from 2 of my local newsagents. This involved lots of flicking through the pile of magazines to find the few Editors related editions. I needed to satisfy my own collector-cravings, but also to ship copies out to other fans in mainland Europe who couldn't get hold of these little treasures themselves. The horrible downside to this was that these newsagents probably had me labelled as some kind of deviant. Here I was over-purchasing this magazine read by ladies, whilst giving the wonderful and creepy sounding excuse "I'm collecting the condom tins". Not good, people. Not good at all.  This is what it is to be truly dedicated to the Editors cause.

In terms of lyrics, "You don't need this disease" is a very good fit, much like the product they are promoting. Ho ho!  I'm not sure any other lines from Editors' songs would have had the same relevance, except possibly "There's nothing harder...." from Blood. Or maybe "You came on your own...." from An End Has a Start.

OK, alright, I'll stop now before this gets any sillier. Normal uploading service will be resumed  shortly.

brought to you with lots of lemming-love :) x
