I'm from the generation of Editors fans who thought that in 2006 a change of venue from The Cluny in Newcastle, which holds 300 people, to the Academy in the city centre which took 2000 was a major upgrade. A very big deal. In comparitive terms, this buries that.
Here, in full, is Editors' show from the end of October 2013 at the Ziggo Dome in Amsterdam. This live engagement acted as a marker to their progress, and if you really need to see just how much they'd achieved in 8 years through ridiculous amounts of touring and media undertaken, take a listen back to their appearance at the Melkweg in Amsterdam in 2005. That venue holds 700 people, whereas the Ziggo Dome can accommodate a very healthy 17,000. It represented a clear step up in the size of venues that the band were playing, and the most obvious question was "Could they really cut it in a stadium setting?". If you watch Papillon, Bricks and Mortar or Nothing, it shouldn't be too difficult to reach a conclusion...
There's so much passion in this show from everyone involved. The audience were ready to go, and the band all seem to be extremely animated for this one. It's something that doesn't let up, and in fact only increases the later into the gig we get. For example, the version of Nothing here borders on freewheeling out of control at times. It's mostly due to the haphazardly mobile nature of all the folks attacking it with their instruments but also from Mr Smith, who can abuse a microphone lead like very few other people. He manages not only to do a pose on top of his piano that, had Mr Rezvani captured it would have been a sensational photo, but he knocks over the keyboard used in Papillon during the track. And if you listen you can hear him baiting the crowd even before he's sung the first verse of Papillon.
It's not hard to conclude from this that, although they still have fans here in the UK, Editors have well and truly been embraced by mainland Europe and elevated to a higher status as a live act as a result. If you want to see the band on one of their best nights, this is definitely it. Enjoy the music ;)
