Posted on his social media today, this is Tom playing a song from Smith and Burrows' second studio album, Only Smith and Burrows is Good Enough. It's track number 4, Old TV Shows and sees Mr Smith adopting all of the vocal duties himself. The absence of Andy and the production on Jacquire King means that what was once a sad song wrapped in joyful finery undergoes a shift in sentiment, with the lyrics made more direct by being brought right up to the fore. You may remember the official video for the track featured Smith and Burrows bouncing up and down on trampolines (in shorts, no less). There is no bouncing here.
It was shared under the heading "Tour Prepping" and could be a sign that, aside from his own solo compositions, it's not just Editors songs that will be included in the set lists. After all, he does have a hefty catalogue of material written with other people to access, so he won't be lacking choice when he takes to the tarmac next month. Also, I know that Andy Burrows has a fairly full dance card right now, to say the least, but I wonder if circumstances will permit some kind of on-the-road reunion between the two?
I'm enjoying eavesdropping on Tom's rehearsals, which is essentially what these videos are. He's filming his own test runs and making what historically would have been private into a public thing. The acoustic show before the show. Having been raised in a time where these kind of things normally only surfaced on bootlegs years after the fact, I love that we can experience this now.
