Another cracking little interview from our friends in Italy, as Tom and Justin sit down to chat with Virgin Radio about VI OLENCE. The lady with the questions is clearly passionate about her subject matter, a fact demonstrated by the Hyena tattoo on her ankle. It's a piece of body art that leads to an interesting confession when it comes up again as a topic at 8.26 minutes into the clip. The conversation was all about progress and doing new things musically as a band, while acknowledging that you might alienate some of your fans on the way.
"Just because I'm not that fond of that song (Hyena)...you love it and that's amazing."
Wow. I've wondered before if The Weight of Your Love is a record that the band may not be able to fully appreciate and listen back to with any objectivity, purely because of the awkwardness surrounding its inception. The amount of stress, negativity and expectation that was thrown at them around the time of recording and release must have been horrific. That's without considering the journalistic post-mortem that they had to undergo for the entire E4 campaign. It's no surprise that Hyena is the one track that he's not too keen on because of its continued absence from setlists. I will gently, and very respectfully correct Mr Smith on one thing, and that was they have never played Hyena live before. t's not been many times, only three that I'm aware of, but here's two of them:-
I wonder if that's the case with all their records? That there are songs which didn't quite make 100% on the enthusiasm meter but which made it onto the finished collection. Or as with anything, are there juts pieces of music that they've simply fallen out of love with over time (like AEHAS, for example)? This is another instance of a good interviewer managing to get some really interesting answers from her subjects, and all in a language which isn't her first, which is even more impressive. Kudos to her for that. Enjoy the chatter ;)
