Saturday Night Live Polska 3rd March 2018

"The river gets wider in front of us..."

At the time of writing E6 is just a few days away from being thrown towards clammering fingers, with the band starting their limited run of UK dates tonight in Bimingham and promotional dates lining up before them, it definitely feels a lot like the campaign of VI OLENCE they're embarking on is taking it's first initial strides. On that note, I hope all you folks in attendance have an amazing time and stay safe in this satanic weather we've been experiencing here of late. Springtime? Bollocks.

Three Editors appeared on the Polish version of Saturday Night Live yesterday, and they brought with them an acoustic duology made up of Papillon and also the brand new song Violence. The performance was on a channel that very kindly chooses to geo-block anyone who tries to watch from outside the region, but we Editors fans are a resourceful bunch with agents everywhere. The footage you'll be watching here was captured by friend to the Archive, "M". I haven't used any real names here just in case posting this lands me in hot water over some rights issue or other. Remember when I shared Editors at Glastonbury 2016 on Youtube? We all know how that ended. If they come after me then I can deal with that but I'd rather keep my sources out of harm's way. So many thanks to you for capturing and making this available for the rest of us to enjoy. It's very much appreciated, and this is why Editors' online community works as well as it does. Fans helping fans for the benefit of everyone ;)

Papillon sees Mr Williams and Mr Lockey on guitars and Mr Smith behind the wheel of a large fancy-looking piano. I could go into detail about the performance of this song but I get the distinct feeling that the main magnetic force that drew you here was to watch the airing of Violence. And so, we proceed.

You could make the claim that now we've heard Violence in full for the first time in a professionally recorded form, we've got a handle on it. However, we've heard the acoustic take. From the feedback given by those in attendance at the listening party recently, the song has an electro feel to it and an outro. Both components are obviously non-evident in this stripped down rendition. It's also been described as upbeat, which the opposite of what this sounds like here. That's not a criticism, only a note of caution to myself in claiming to know this number already. Mr Smith really seems to be testing his vocal chords again on this, pushing it as an intrument in its own right. But I would expect nothing less from a man with the greatest vocal range in the UK. From what we've heard so far in Magazine and Hallelujah (So Low), they seem to have gotten to grips with producing concussive sounds and filling in the spaces between notes, which is why I can't wait to hear what Violence sounds like in the final, studio recorded form. For now, sit back and enjoy an excellent performance by Tom, Justin and Elliott on Polish TV ;)
