Magazine live on De Wereld Draait Door 26th March 2018

Editors, you are being evaluated and only the mystical energy within Magazine can get these cynical toes tapping.

The power of Magazine as a song is amazing, and this broadcast from Dutch TV is definitive proof. Editors have appeared on The World Keeps Turning before back in in 2013, where they played Honesty and a 1 minute race through of A Ton of Love. I mentioned at the time that the audience on that night were a little...distant. We have a well known political show here in the UK that airs every Sunday morning, and they occasionally have bands on at the very end of the show. The result is a panel of politicians in suits sitting with the host as they earnestly and timidly attempt to "get down" (while remaining seated), or they just sit doing the mannequin challenge until the last notes ring out. This time around, it looked as though we were in for more of that sort of thing but the band were saved by whatever it is that makes Magazine great.

They've said in interviews that the reactions from fans during the festival shows of 2017 where it was debuted, meant that it became an obvious choice as a first single. It was immediate, and people seemed to instinctively get it from the outset. Tonight, on the 26th March 2018 that phenomenon happened again. The host of the show is immediately into what he's hearing, but his two studio guests either side of him seem unconvinced. However, if you watch their body language from beginning to end you'll notice that they both become more animated. Magazine has something, and it makes me incredibly cheerful to not be able to describe exactly what that something is.

As with all television appearances, the performance is restricted by the confines of a studio environment. There's no flamethrowers or confetti bombs, and very little room to manoeuvre and throw shapes. Plus, there's a foul hazard lurking in the form of a ledge at the front of the stage, which is always beckoning someone to put a foot wrong and invite calamity to the party. Thank goodness that nobody, not a single person in Editors has ever taken a nasty spill during a show, as that would only increase the anxiety for those watching...

I will add in closing that the camera work for this is seizure-inducing. Lots of fast cutting and colour filters and it makes it quite the workout for your eyeballs. If you were thinking of going to the gym tomorrow to work on your retinal fitness (as I'm sure a lot of you do), don't bother. Stay home, break out a tub of Ben and Jerry's and indulge your visually athletic ambitions with this clip instead. Enjoy ;)
