In terms of the timeline we we're still in the "beginning phase" of the VI OLENCE promotional duties but even so, Editors really were being made to work for their money this campaign. This was another in a long, long list of promotional engagements for the band in the weeks and months that followed. With VI OLENCE dropping on the Friday immediately after this but had al;ready experienced some serious plumbing issues (wink wink) Mr Smith, Mr Lockey and Mr Williams dropped by to do the acoustic thing for Jo Whiley. Not only that, it's on the Elton John piano too. Fancy!
The chat covers the listening party that happened for some lucky fans at the beginning of 2018, recording VI OLENCE, backstage past-times, songwriting, the first Editors gig etc etc. We learn an astonishingly weird story about Robert Smith involving Russell. There's also the fact that the NME gave them a good review on the day that publication ceased trading in its physical form. Luckily, Tom's feelings on that fact are expressed after the band did a session for them this morning. Timing is everything.
The first track was Magazine, which was different again from the officially released version you've already heard. With that one, there's an extra piano riff that just completely changes the mood. With Tom being the only band member on piano here, Justin and Elliott played guitar, it's perhaps a bit much to ask him to perform 2 separate song parts at once while singing. He's good, but at a definite disadvantage by only possessing a single pair of hands.
The second number chosen was Cold, and it's another one that takes on a whole new feel in the delivery. It resembles the studio take, sort of. I love the way it sounds, with Tom changing the key it's sung in and the way the guitars show up half way through. Elliott substitutes the lead synth line with his vocals...it's just really great to listen to. A song that was so electronic reduced and rebuilt before our very ears.
The whole show is rounded off with acoustic Smokers, enjoy the music everyone ;)
