Italian Pop Kids hanging with the band
What we have here are the 3 tracks that were broadcast on the Ossigeno show last night, as well as an interview with the host Manuel Agnelli. If you ever forget just how delicate and beautiful Editors can sound without all the bells and whistles, here's a reminder. The first track is Violence stripped back to its very core elements with Justin, Elliott and Tom walking you through it. It's funny that the album recording of this track is so up-tempo and energetic, while the acoustic version feels like an exercise in regret and soul-searching. I love the duality of it.
The next number is Smokers which, if you've been a fan for a while, you already know so intimately that you might as well just go ahead and marry the damn thing. At the very least you should move in together with it. For an alternative look at just how powerful this song is when it's plugged in, check out this post. You will not be disappointed.
The third item on this limited setlist was one that was held over for the season finale of the show, and just features Mr Smith and a piano giving a very gentle take on Blood. When it's placed side-by-side with its electric sister, the two renditions couldn't be more different. One sounds like a wild, slightly spiteful rant at high speed while the other is more measured and controlled, with everything leading to that chorus that quietly states "we have nothing in common". Along with the version of Life is a Fear for 3ème Gauche in 2015, this is up there on my list of favourite Editors acoustic tracks. It's sublime.
Lastly, there's some chat about identity, and the origins of the band. All in all a nice way for the Italian masses to meet the band via a national TV station, and for the Italian Pop Kids to spend an evening with the group they have such an affinity for. Enjoy the music ;)
Please note: The videos were all blocked worldwide on YouTube so they're available here as downloads.
