Editors Instagram - January 2018

If there were any concerns that not a lot was happening with Editors lately, a flurry of frenetic motion in January made sure that it was a suggestion that drifted away quickly. Wow. I have on offer Editors photos, short vidoes and an mp3. All of that and Rahi playing excerpts from Radiohead's Paranoid Android on guitar. No joke.

On the 6th of January, we had something of a "moment" in the world of Editors obsessiveness. In late afternoon the band's official twitter/instagram account posted a picture of a very suave looking Mr Smith appeared, bathed in red light and dressed like a mortgage adviser. The caption below read:-

"I've got a little secret for you..."

An obvious reference to the song Magazine, and my initial reaction was "Oh, after weeks of keeping us guessing NOW you decide to start helping us out with the lyrics? Fat lip? Tight sodding ship? Too little, too late folks!".

My surly demeanor was of course replaced with joy fairly quickly, as it became apparent that activity was imminent. There's something about seeing evidence right in front of you that is so much more satisfying than just hearing that things are happening. Rahi then put out a snap of what looked like a video shoot containing 5 actors in ripped suits. Hmmmm...

The head-messing continued the following day as Mr Rezvani released another couple of photos, this time of a mock film poster with "Editors featuring Tom Smith" as its title, as well as another glimpse of an E6 related photoshoot.

On the 10th of January, another still from the potential video for Magazine emerged tagged "Soon", being posted by the band's official account, Rahi and from Mr Smith himself who very kindly clarified just how soon was. Something would be going down on the monday and tuesday of next week.

Of course, the biggest announcement so far occurred on Friday the 12th, where a 30 second teaser clip was released. It was a short glimpse of the official video for Magazine and it looked very red, with Tom and a briefcase and some other folks in suits falling around the place. There was a statement that the new single, was going to get its first official airplay on three separate radio stations here in the UK on Monday, with some chat with Tom, meaning that the weekend was now going to take forever to get done.

When we finally got to the 15th, we were rewarded with the first radio play of Magazine on the Jo Whiley show, as well as some interviews with the lady herself and a more lengthy one with Gordon Smart on RadioX. The next day brought more interviews with Tom on Studio Brussel, NPO Radio 3FM and NPO Radio 2. What was extremely curious, however, was the sudden unexpected mellowing of relations between Editors and their old sparring partners the NME, as they sat down for a live Facebook Q&A. Very surprising indeed. Not only that, Tom also went on to give a breakdown of what the song Magazine was all about to the same interviewer at the Q&A, and it was released as a separate clip on the 25th January.
Would you buy a briefcase full of shellfish from this man?

On the 16th of January we were allowed to take a look around Mr Rezvani's imagination again, as the official promo for Magazine aired. As much as he resembled a mortgage adviser in the photos that we'd seen prior to release, the video has him looking more like an maître d., albeit a maître d that can throw some wicked shapes when the mood takes him. As the Arctic Monkeys would say:-

"I'll bet that you look gloom on the dancefloor..."

One thing I love is the way Tom sings the flash your winning smile line with a grin that never fully manages to reach his eyes. There are parts of it remind which me of the video for Push Your Head Towards the Air, especially when the folks in business dress are fighting with each other. It's very stylish, looks great and makes me ponder again just what early Editors videos could have been had they crossed paths with Rahi earlier.

After the initial flood of dopamine had passed, things headed south into some very dark territory a day or so later when Rahi inadvertently revealed himself to be involved in the secret cloning of Mr Smith. It hurt to break that news, especially as the band prepare to begin  a new chapter in their adventure. Sometimes it's about sharing love for Editors, other times it's all about the secrets (and making shit up).

If it seemed like the activity for the month was beginning to slow, the 22nd changed everything. The band announced a competition with a quite sensational prize. As you might expect, things got nutty in the fandom remarkably quickly with everyone making their own clips to submit. Some of the stories were fantastic, and it's great to think that some of "our people" are going to get a chance to win such a great prize. Good luck to everyone who entered, it was fun hearing what the band mean to you.
4 days later it emerged that three members of Editors had performed a secret gig at PIAS headquarters, where they played an acoustic set. It's the stuff of nightmares for the hardcore fans among us, because not only did your favourite band play a show with a setlist you're not sure of...you missed it. These kinds of things are invisible splinters in fanboy/fangirl brains. Having made discreet inquiries, all I can confirm is that they did 3 songs and that Magazine was one of them. Beyond that, those in attendance seem reluctant to kiss and tell.

More radio action on the 26th, where the promotional baton was passed from Tom to Ed as he spoke with Goldierocks on The Selector Radio.

It was nice to see the reappearance of Justin's travel snapshots, and the two most recent ones have him in both Amsterdam then Brussels. What's he up to? Well Rahi's studio is in Amsterdam and their label is in Brussels so the mind boggles. Editors shenanigans, almost certainly, but of what nature?

Finally, and for no good reason other than to share a thing of beauty, I've included an mp3 in an already bursting January collection called Hallelujah (recurring). I was so taken with that short electronic intro just before the drums kick in on the live teaser film by Rahi, that I looped it to make the moment last for around 41 seconds (the original runs at just under 10). It may seem superfluous, but it made me happy. Who among us doesn't want an extra 31 seconds of happiness in their lives? Especially considering how mopey and glum we are normally. I mean, just look at the band we're most fond of...

The zip file below contains a ridiculous 68 items in total, enjoy Editors' Instagram January 2018 and once again, good luck to all you competition entrants ;)
