It's not quite the end of the year just yet, which means that there's still time to dust off another live audio document courtesy of the Archive's man at the barrier, Mr GaryUK. This one is part of his 2010 odyssey, which saw him take in several gigs in several towns and cities as he followed the band around the country. It's another part of Editors' story that has thankfully been trapped in amber and preserved for moments like this almost 7 years later. Thank you Gary. I never get tired of posting your work here ;)
King Leetch's bass finds itself at a very respectable level in the mix during this evening's proceedings, much more to the fore than is usual on this campaign surrounding ITLAOTE. It means it stands right out during songs like Blood and Lights, giving you a good sense of just how solid a foundation he provides for everyone else to rest on. He even gets a Bricks and Mortar style introduction during the beginning of Last Day, which is a rarity in itself.
If this were to happen in Newcastle now then technically it wouldn't be a homecoming show, seeing as how their original record label Kitchenware, which was just up the street from the Haymarket bus station, has sadly closed for business in the intervening years. I say technically because I think the reception will always be positive for them here. In 2010, however, they were still very much adopted sons of the city and it shows in the audience participation throughout. They're a boisterous bunch of cats and in case you were wondering, they absolutely know all the words. They also do that thing that happens occasionally when An End Has a Start is played, where the crowd apes Chris' lead guitar. You know the crowd is on point when they do the words and the guitar lines too:-
"Dur dur dur dur, dur dur dur dur dur!"
Not just that, they do it again for the beginning of Munich:-
"Dur dur dur dur dur dur, dur dur dur dur dur dur!"
I've heard (and shared) gigs where the audience appears to either be sleeping or in a different venue. It's only when you compare those nights with ones like this that the relationship this band has with its fans becomes obvious, and why that synchronicity is essential to elevating things above it just being a group of people gathering together to listen to some songs. Enjoy the music, as much as Newcastle did ;)
