Oddity #19 - I kissed a guard and I liked it...

..or maybe not.

It's almost Valentine's Day so I felt like this was oddly appropriate. The song Nothing has become something of a live favourite, because of its energy and the way that the band throw themselves into playing it. There's the recent revelation in an interview that Tom got so carried away during a show in Zagreb on this 2013 tour that he punched himself in the chest with sufficient force to unknowingly break his own rib, and had to finish the remaining gigs on painkillers and alcohol. It's resulted in a hard bump on the chest which is apparently still there to this day. If I had to guess which song he did it during, it would probably be this one. It just seems to bring something out of both the audience and the band. When the track was played on the last tour dates in 2015 there was an extra percussionist onstage with Ed, which probably increased the power of it even more.

On this night in Poland, Tom is clearly very much in the moment, going from stage to piano, then back down again to slap the hands of the fans at the front. Then in a split second he glances across, spots his opportunity and goes for it. A public display of affection that you suspect nobody saw coming, least of all the security guy who does manage a little grin afterwards, and it's very sweet in its own way. Well played, sir.
