The making of "In Dream" (extended version) October 2015

The inside scoop on the recording of In Dream from the people in the best position to tell you about it. This is very similar in style to the Weight of Your Love documentary, which laid out the recording process of that album as well as the accompanying drama and near-band-death experiences that came with it.  It's great to hear each individual member of the group tell their side of the story, as well as the collective attitude towards making the album.  It reinforces the idea of 5 individuals working together as a solid unit. Please note that there were two versions of the film released, and the one on Editors' official YouTube runs about 5 minutes shorter than this one.

Shot in black and white by the Hand Held Cine Club, here's a chance to spend 14 minutes with the band giving their side of the In Dream story.  It's all set against a rural setting in Scotland that just looks utterly remarkable. There's something about the way that HHCC film things that gives their subject matter more depth, and you certainly get a sense of just how isolated Editors were when they were recording In Dream. There's a shot of the building at 1 minute 35 seconds of the movie and there is literally nothing else around it. The Lockey brothers seem to have that extremely rare breed of talent that allows them to operate visually and musically, and are able to create really cool art in both mediums. With his Instagram posts from airports and on flights, for example, Justin has succeeded in making the tedium of repetitive airline travel seem interesting, and not many folks can do that.

As well as simply making music, their previous album The Weight of Your Love had the additional stresses and mechanics of seeing if 5 people could act in consort and be creative together as a new band. Once that had been established, the making of In Dream was Editors working out what the personality of this new lineup was, and recovering/asserting  their independence in that form. The Crear sessions were only ever intended to be a demo exercise, and it appears there were no preconceptions or plans about producing an actual album. Circumstances evolved and were shaped by the music they made and the vibes in the room. It demonstrated that if they follow their instincts, good things will follow. Long may that continue.

Enjoy the story ;)

**Please note - the video has been blocked by PIAS on YouTube so although I can't add it to the Archive, I can direct you Hand Held Cine's cut of it on Vimeo.
