Sziget Festival Hungary August 15th 2009

This gig was originally recorded and shared by MrRuin, huge thanks to him for what is an excellent quality representation of the ITLAOTE era.  I'm making them available again here in their original FLAC format in accordance with the taper's wishes. I'm also sharing some fan-footage from the day, as well as a collection of excellent snaps by photographer Taras Khimchak (see above), who you can visit using this link.

The band open the show with Bricks and Mortar, which serves as a reminder of how great it sounds live thanks to the taper.  I confess that I hadn't listened to it in a while but it was fun getting re-acquainted. This being an early rendition of the song it ends rather abruptly, without Tom doing the final "I hope life is good for you" over nothing but a synth at the end.  Those subtle tweaks would come later after it had been burned into the band consciousness through touring, and they were able to step away from the structure a little. Also available is The Big Exit which still manages to retain its creepy, claustrophobic weirdness even in a daytime slot on a festival stage. Papillon was still in its infancy here, having yet to become the party-enhancing animal that would happily steal your cigarettes, raid your liquor cabinet and vomit on your carpet before disappearing into the (dirty) night.  All those little added extras that we love now, including the "Elliott Effect" of making it just a little bit longer and more dramatic, had yet to happen.

Something to look out for is the intro to You Are Fading.  If you're used to Mr Urbanowicz playing you in on his Rickenbacker, you'll be in for a shock. It's all very much in keeping with the band's decision to up the electronic quota of their performances at the time of ITLAOTE being released. There are those who would argue that you shouldn't mess with the classics, but I love it. Enjoy the music ;) x

All of the following was shot by Watershun, thanks very much to you for sharing.  We don't have good quality coverage of the entire show, but I'll take what I can get when it comes to this band. As usual I have to issue the pre-download warning that this was all filmed from the crowd, and as such it has that "bootleg shimmy" that this stuff often does. That doesn't, however, make it in any way less interesting...
