"The guitar was hideously out of tune at the end, but it's not the end of the world. Worse things happen." - Tom after You Are Fading.
This was from a time when I didn't file Editors recordings with the same level of psychiatrist-worrying diligence and meticulous, obsessive precision that I do now. Because of that, I don't have the details of the person who recorded it so if it was you, thank you very much for making it available and apologies for me being so remiss.
This was recorded almost 15 years prior to this reposting, on the 10th of November 2007 in Lille, France. I believe it was the first of a four night appearance as part of Festival Les Inrocks in France, with the band playing La Cigale the following night and then Toulouse on the 14th.
Having been released in June of 2007, the band were now very familiar with the songs from their second album An End Has a Start. Not so familiar that fatigue had arrived at having played them hundreds of times in succession, but enough to be able to go out and hand them over to the audience with unabashed confidence night after night. Unsurprising, because they had spent the months between AEHAS coming out and their arrival in Lille by touring Europe, the United States and then an extended run of shows in the UK during October. Global activities which appear to be so improbable now, after these last two years of having our collective travelling feet shackled.
The set list is 50% Back Room era songs with the other 50% all from the An End Has a Start album. It's an ideal opportunity to compare and contrast; this is where we came from and this is where we're at. The gig was pretty much an all business affair, with surprisingly little banter between band and attendees as they just plugged in and let the music speak for itself. Tom's right, though. His guitar tuning took a walk as You Are Fading drew to a close but I'll take passion over perfection every time. Those strings went out because they got played with purpose, which is all you can ask for as a fan.
Enjoy the show ;)
