Tom Smith - Live at Radio Freccia 30th October 2025


Thanks to Hannah for pointing me in the direction of this very beautiful thing. 

A little piece of housekeeping first. The original broadcast for this session ran for almost 30 minutes, but there was some official stuff played along the way so I excised it leaving two acoustic songs and an interview.  

First up is Tom being interviewed by Editors fan and DJ Cecile B. Some things to learn and enjoy from this encounter:-

As an aside, there's something profoundly disturbing about hearing that Tom's kids are now 17 and 12 respectively. As far as markers of passing time go, that's a pretty stark reminder that we're all a little older than when all of this began.  Yikes! 

Interview

Next up is Tom and Nic playing Deep Dive. You can still feel the flow that was constructed and accumulated during the recent September/October tour, as they're still very much locked in and attuned to each other. Lyrically, the idea of reducing all our usual contemplation and considerations to a simple "I'm alive and you're alive" is a real favourite of mine. This song is, of course, where the the title of Tom's debut album comes from. One month away... 

Deep Dive


Lastly, they dug right back into the catalogue to play Smokers Outside the Hospital Doors, from the An End Has a Start album. There's something about Tom and Nic playing that has the ability to make very old songs sound like they just had a B12 injection or something. The tempo is changed, the bombast removed and what remains is melody and harmonies in its most pure form. I love the studio version of Smokers Outside the Hospital Doors, and that original recording will always endure, but I do like it when the essence that underlies all that energy and noise is revealed once in a while.
