This was a special night.
There's been some controversy regarding Editors' place on the bill at
Werchter this year. They were clearly a much bigger draw than the
organisers had anticipated, and would have been much better suited
taking to the main stage instead. Belgium loves Editors, in case you
hadn't already heard. However, the fact that they became such a hot
ticket on the day may have been one of the ingredients that made this
what it was. If you were somebody who battled through the queue to get
inside, knowing that there was still a large group of people watching outside
then this will only have heightened your anticipation for the show
ahead. All that would have to happen to make this event complete would
be if the band themselves were on form and ready to deliver.
Turns out, they were.
That and the intimacy manufactured by having no roof and some very clear
boundaries in terms of walls and doors, means that any energy generated
is not going anywhere but back and forth between the band and their
audience. There was similar situation at Glastonbury a week ago but this
felt much, much bigger. Would this have happened if they'd been on the
main stage? We'll never know, but it's also not that important.
Something amazing was created at Werchter from all the circumstances
detailed above.
The set is one that has started to become familiar if you've been
keeping up with their activities of late, except for one crucial
difference.
It being Werchter, where the song No Sound but the Wind
brought them a certain notoriety in 2010, they decided to bring it back.
Tom played it solo, just like he did 13 years ago, but this time there
was a noticeable shift. Back then, Jason was standing in a large group
of people who were unfamiliar with the song, which is why he stood out
so readily as he sang every word on that famous video. Now, 25,000 people had the hymn sheet and united as a single voice of accompaniment. It's beautiful. Surely this is
the very definition of what live music should aspire to achieve?
All in all this was an amazing night for Editors and also their fans.
Enjoy the music ;)
