What a month.
Editors played 6 shows during June, five festivals prefaced by a warm-up show at Northampton Roadmender. This will not be their busiest time during the summer run, as that will come in August when they have 6 festivals and a support slot with James. Even from my undeniably biased position, there was an acute progression in the quality of the live shows as June advanced. Pinkpop was good, Glastonbury was better but it was the 25th of June where everything seemed to peak. I would add a disclaimer that because of the absence of a live stream and my own lack of attendence, I have no idea if Ejekt Festival managed to top Werchter. If it did, that would have been an amazing feat.
Allocated a part of the festival grounds called The Barn, Editors took EBM to a room full that was at capacity, with more watching on the big screens outside. What happened next was one of the best shows they've ever played. All electricity and passion as six musicians attempted to connect with 25,000 people. From the video and audio available to us, they succeeded.
And so, to the future. Justin is due to play a show with Yourcodenameis:milo on the 17th of August at Arctangent in Bristol, and it's right before Editors play the Summer in the City Festival in Romania. He's going to be a busy man. Editors' return to Mexico that was floated by Russell in an interview last September hasn't been confirmed yet, but that's unsurprising considering the fluid nature of making plans in a post-pandemic world. Especially considering that most tours have to be financially front-loaded by the band before they happen, only serving to up the stakes should the unthinkable happen and a cancellation occurs. "Risk" is now the prime consideration, probably even above the usual logistics of placing musicians, their crew and all their equipment in a different location at a specific time.
Smith and Burrows haven't reappeared but there was another sighting of them together which is included here. Editors' touring schedule for 2023, at least right now, finishes in September. Logically, this could mean that Tom would then be available for any promotional duties (including touring) for S&B. The more pressing question is whether or not there will be any new recorded material?
