Barrowlands 29th January 2023 (GaryUK Recording)

This is third in a trilogy of recordings by the Archive's chief supplier of quality bootlegs, Mr GaryUK. To my ears, this is actually the best of the three, but you're free to disagree. I just think you can hear Ben's contributions loud and clearly at Barrowlands. Thank you Gary. This internet profile that acts as a distraction for the melancholic souls who pass by is as good as it is because of stuff like this, and people like yourself.

I remember the promotional cycle for the Violence album, and how the underlying concept for it was the idea of bombardment from external stimulus, and how even things like news broadcasts had begun felt like an attack over time. Having listened to EBM a lot, it feels like they went from observing and commenting on that problem to actually trying to recreate it as a sound. Even live, the tempo and aggressive nature of the music from EBM does feel like a barrage at times. On the actual record, Tom has said that it was the job of the middle track Silence to act as a break. An briefly calm place to find respite, within the swirling hurricane that surrounds it. Similarly, they've placed that song around the mid-way point of the set list, with acoustic versions of Nothing and Lights before it, no doubt to serve the same purpose.

I'm struck by how well the songs from EBM fit into the running order, especially when you consider that it covers a time span of almost 20 years. I tend to think that the musical effect on the mind and body from a live gig is like a series of waves; sometimes you're being lifted and it can take a few tracks to reach the peak (which might plateau for a little while), and then you slide back down to recuperate in a between-waves trough before the process of building back up starts again. The duration and intensities can vary throughout, but it all usually finishes with the metaphorical wave hitting the beach during the last song. Then you go home euphoric with ringing in your ears and unhealthy amounts of sweat in your sweaty areas.

Quite often when a band releases a new record and take it out on the road, the planned flow can be interrupted as you feel the audiences hit an unexpected  trough. This can either be through unfamiliarity with what they're hearing or they just aren't sure if they like it or not. From the recordings I've listened to lately, however, it seems like people are just more receptive and I'm sure there's probably a number of reasons for it. Whatever they are, it's great to hear.

Oh, and all you fans of obscene language can listen out for another barely concealed Tom Swears incident during Picturesque.

Enjoy the music ;)
