Up next is one of two recordings submitted to the Archive by TheServant. Files are being shared in their original FLAC format in accordance with the taper's wishes. A great big thank you to him for making this work available for the rest of us to hear.
2005 saw Editors still establishing themselves by touring Europe and beyond, collecting fans and admirers the old fashioned way. They played lost of shows and threw everything into the performances. As well as having some bullet-proof tunes, they also acquired the one benefit that's difficult to manufacture without some form of authenticity; word of mouth. Journalists can tell you a band is great in print, but ultimately the truth will only be revealed in a recording or from the stage of a darkened club somewhere. If people dig what you're doing, they will share you as their secret. If not, it works the other way too.
This set is virtually all of The Back Room album (minus Distance), with two b-sides and a cover of French Disko by Stereolab. As I was setting this post up I decided to try and name all the cover versions that Editors or Tom Smith as a solo performer have been involved with. No preparation, but as if someone had just asked me out of the blue. There's a lot more than I initially thought, and the range is quite broad. Veering from Lou Reed to Gorillaz, or from the pure pop of Justin Timberlake to the darker subversive pop of The Cure. Most of them are scattered throughout the Archive, except for the ones that were exclusively official releases (Walk on the Wild Side, for example). Happy hunting.
In my opinion, for what it's worth, the best rendition of French Disko was the one they did with Maximo Park for a TV Special called "The JD Set", which saw both bands take to the stage and lyrics being sung from a bit of scrap paper. True. You can check it out here. Enjoy the show ;)

Please note that this is a redux version of a clip that already exists
on YouTube, but the audio was totally blown out. You can check it out for yourself here. I did some reworking and now we have this. It's only a partial video, I know, but it really gives you a sense of
what it was that made Editors such an interesting proposition way back
in the day. All jittery energy and thrown guitars.
brought to you with lots of lemming-love ;) x
