Tom and Andy were guests on Zoe Ball's morning show today, dispelling any notions that the promotional campaign for Only Smith and Burrows is Good Enough had ended. I'd assumed that with Razorlight becoming an ongoing concern again and Editors reconvening for their own musical odyssey, Smith and Burrows would be placed with care back into toy box for another 10 years.
Wrong.
This is actually great news for S&B because I believe that the lockdown robbed them of much that they were owed, especially in terms of playing live and taking their music out to the world in a more personal and intimate setting. So it would take a chronically curmudgonly kitty to begrudge them some time at Maida Vale. As you'll hear in the interview segment, this isn't the first time that Tom has been to the studio. Listening to this was like going back in time 3 months to the initial release of their 2nd album, just in the general vibe of the whole thing, even down to the "So how did you meet each other?" style questions. Without spoiling it for you, there are some very interesting bits of news contained within the answers given.
This is actually Eurovision weekend, and with that in mind they chose to make the occasion a little special. It also succeeded in dispelling any possible notions of this band having any kind of dark and ominous edges. If you cut Smith and Burrows into two you'd be able to see that sweet, sappy pop occupies their respective cores. Imagine a time machine that could take you back to Tom in 2006 and tell him that he'll be singing a Katrina and the Waves song on national radio in 11 years. You know what? In spite of any potential protests and disgust, I reckon he'd already know it. We're on to you, Smith. Those faux clouds you walk around under aren't fooling anyone. Enjoy the music ;)
