More delights from the mysterious DVD without a label that I recently unearthed while indulging my minimalist tendencies, and this time it's a show all about An End Has a Start. Taken from Space Shower TV in Japan, this features the band being interviewed about the mechanics of recording E2, as well as 4 songs being played during what appears to be a soundcheck at one a trio of shows at the Brixton Academy during October 2007. You can really hear the sonic differences between a full room and an empty one, especially during Ed's drum intro to Smokers.
The interview is gold, with all four Editors still cheerfully fresh and not yet fatigued by the relentless campaign of touring and promotion they'd just set out on. They're also in possession of 4 working, fully funtional senses of humour. You'll learn all kinds of interesting facts about the how AEHAS was assembled, maybe even some stuff you didn't know. For example, were you aware that there is sampled gunfire from a clay pigeon shooting session they all had on that second album, and that it's underneath the snare drum parts in When Anger Shows? Me neither. Also, we learn why eating mussels on tour is rarely a good idea.
Hearing those studio clips from An End Has a Start after almost 12 years of being immersed in their live counterparts is a bit of a shock to the system. I've effectively reprogrammed my brain to only recognise the live takes, and I found that hearing them again provoked similar reactions I had the time I first listened to AEHAS, courtesy of a group-bought promo CD a month before it was released officially. It's a credit to the enduring nature of those compositions.
It's also struck me how regularly Jacknife Lee has been a part of their journey. From remixing Bullets in 2005, to his work on AEHAS in 2007 and right up to the present day on the session that produced Frankenstein...and other gifts we have yet to receive. He's the one producer that's been a repeat collaborator with Editors on projects which ended in fully released music (otherwise Flood would also be on that list for his brief second tenure on the E4 sessions after ITLAOTE).
Enjoy the show ;)
