Give them time and they can still find ways to surprise you.
Barricades is the most recently released original material by Editors as part of the Blanck Mass Sessions LP. While we all waited and wondered if there would be a live version of the track played during upcoming shows, and given its style just what each member of the band would be doing during the composition, Mr Smith took to Instagram to play it in person for the very first time. This could very well have been Tom testing the waters to see if the song works well as a purely acoustic take, in the same way that he's done with No Sound but the Wind and Blood, with a view to it finlly making its actual stage debut down the line somewhere. I also suspect that the current collaboration with Andy Burrows on S&B's second long player has him inspired and he's just enjoying the process of playing. That's not to say he's not getting that from Editors, just that his compositions with Andy are a little more "near the source" and pure in their structure, as opposed to the electronic wizardry that often shapes Editors songs.
Whatever the reason, Tom appeared unannounced on Instagram to run through Barricades with nothing but an acoustic guitar and that's what's being shared here. Because of the medium it was broadcast on, and the picture filter used it has the feel of being an acoustic cover version by a fan. If I'm right this is also the first time Tom has ever really used his own social media to play music, rather than just do idents and give sneaky peeks into what the band are up to. He performs Barricades and then makes his exit with a definitive "That is enough of that". Job done. Enjoy the music ;)
