This was the first of what should have been a trio of gigs in France for Editors during April. There were two smaller shows that would lead up to a slot at Musilac Festival on the 26th. However, as happened with Hurricane Festival in 2016, some seriously unkind weather descended on the site of the show and effectively took out an entire day of performances. We look out across the land there's no sound but the wind wrecking part of the stage area. So it was an anticlimactic end to what should have been a trio of celebratory evenings for French Editors fans and those travelling in. However, there is something positive that we can all take from this.
The Archive's premier audio historian, Mr GaryUK has been on travelling again and he just happens to have come back to the Archive with some keepsakes in the form of the first two concerts. This is his recording of Editors playing Rouen on the 24th April 2019, and the quality here is just fantastic. Many thanks again to you Gary for your time, your work and your kindness in making this available to us all. It's very much appreciated, Sir ;)
Of note is that this show saw the return of Nicholas Willes as a guitarist standing in for Justin who was away being a civilian and attending to the important stuff. Welcome back Mr Willes, and I hope that all is well with Mr Lockey and co.
Those of you with a speculative mind were probably curious to see if these shows would contain any shocks, specifically the new song Barricades. Alas it did not, but that's not to detract from it still being a sturdy collection of moodcore favourites guaranteed to keep you singing along (and sobbing uncontrollably at the same time, obviously). Lovely to hear Life is a Fear back in contention for your attention, and in terms of playing styles Nic Willes is a man who knows how to throw casual feedback into songs at just the right point (see Hallelujah just after the handclap break). Ocean of Night seems to be a song with a lot of personalities depending on when it's played. Sometimes it start as an acoustic number before blossoming into full electric, other times it has an extended drum outro from Ed and in Rouen it is much more faithful to the recorded take. It also has a sample from ERM=BD in it during the final few bars. They also chose Nothing as the song to close the show over other traditional candidates, which was a great way to send everyone home on a high.
Enough chatter, enjoy the music everyone ;)
