On the 18th May 2018 Editors were guests at the Non-Comm radio Conference in Philadelphia, where they performed a short set as a full band. When it happened I felt sure it would have been another acoustic set, which is something they were doing quite a few of, but surprisingly they all plugged in and got down instead.
There are moments when it's clear that the energy between the band and the crowd is out of sync and it alters the way the songs are played. Take for instance the part in Magazine where the music stops just before the last chorus comes in. Normally Tom will say something, often asking how the crowd are doing etc but here he just paces the stage waiting for his moment to come back in singing. Also, the beginning of An End Has a Start usually has people throwing their hands up and cheering but here the audience remain remarkable statuesque. It's something they do for most of the set, actually, but then this isn't your typical Editors crowd. Unfortunately if they aren't giving up that energy that Editors always thrive on then it almost forces the band to reduce the intensity slightly. There's a line in Munich that I always think of in these situations:-
You'll speak when you're spoken too.
They always react to the people in front of them and if those people aren't "speaking to them", either due to reduced enthusiasm or just unfamiliarity, they stay just a little bit quieter than if everyone is taking part fully. That's why some of those stadium engagements from Europe are always so much fun to watch because you can see the band and the people who came to see them pushing each other's buttons.
The fact that the show actually took place at 12.30 in the afternoon and was free entry, meant that there wasn't the usual atmosphere you get from people who had been planning to go for weeks/months in advance. This was lunch time on a week day, after all. It also saw them playing in a much smaller working environment, and with the previous band's equipment still on there which must have been a trip.
I'm not putting this show down, just indicating that this is more like a music industry showcase than a regular Editors concert. If you're already a fan then it won't matter because this is pro-shot and the sound is amazing. Enjoy the music ;)
