Editors Instagram - October 2017

With no touring or media obligations the last month was less about quantity of material, and more about significant moments which is why the zip file below is so very, very small. Here's what went down in October.

In a further effort to provide confusion and delight in equally healthy doses, Editors' official Instagram account marked the arbitrary 8th anniversary of ITLAOTE being released, having chosen not to mark the decade since AEHAS came out earlier this year. I swear, they are impossible to second-guess and although it produces rolling eyes and heavy sighs, it doesn't remove a single grain of enthusiasm I have for their shenanigans. Contrary cats.

Then there were the photos of Tom and Andy Burrows recording. This is a can filled with gloomy worms that has "please speculate" written all across its wriggly surface. Knowing what we know, and given the history between these two gents, it would be easy to jump to the conclusion that Smith & Burrows had reformed just in time for christmas. I'm not so sure. If you read the tagline attached to the photo of Tom playing piano in the studio, it says:-

"absolutely zero fucking Christmas x"

A seemingly solid assertion of no yuletide action. Also, Tim Baxter's name was mentioned and if you read his bio, it says that he's currently working on the new Andy Burrows album. It could be that what we're looking at is Tom contributing to that record, rather than another collaboration between the two of them as an independent entity. Of course there's the usual disclaimer attached; I could be wrong but logically all the pieces fit...

...until you remember that they actually set up an Instagram account with both the Smith&Burrows name and logo on it last month and have been sharing snaps there. Maybe they're looking to do a small release as S&B in tandem with the larger Andy Burrows solo output? As I said in paragraph two, contrary cats.

I will say that there was some initial unease when the Smith and Burrows photos went live. The last time the two of them worked together on the Funny Looking Angels album in 2011, it was during the disintegration of relationships that finally led to the demise of Editors Mk1. This was the point of creative impasse which ultimately resulted in the abandonment of the E4 recordings, and the expulsion of Mr Urbanowicz. Tom had remarked in interviews afterwards that recording with Andy was exactly what he needed, in light of the difficulties in his own band, and all kinds of alarm bells were sounding. Had the recording of E6 taken a turn for the worse? Were there problems with the new music?

Then, mercifully the weight (of your love) was lifted when three days later news emerged that E6 had been mastered. A photo of a CD with a thumb carefully and deliberately obscuring any incriminating details appeared, with the date of completion being the 26th October 2017. We did discover that Matt Colton was in charge of the proceedings, the second time he's worked on Editors music after also mastering In Dream. So it appears that everything is fine in Editorsville.

It also seems that the band have decided not to spend too much time living as civilians, preferring instead to continue pushing along the momentum they built up from the summer festival mini-tour. Good for them, with the caveat that they don't go nuts and burn themsleves out on the impending E6 campaign that will no doubt occupy at least 2 years of their lives once it starts. Healthy but glum, that's how we like our Editors.

One matter of trivia this month was that Tom changed both his profile picture and the description on his Instagram profile. It no longer reads:-

bleakness / banter / birmingham boy band

It's now simply:-

thmssmth editors

Reduction, reduction, reduction.

In keeping with consistent moaning and complaining  of each Instagram collection post prior to this one, I am duty bound to report that Dream Dark as Your Heaven still remains unreleased. Not only that but as we crunch through the leaves of autumn and on towards winter, the single track release that EdiBow hinted could be happening in the summer now doesn't look like it's going to happen at all. Which is a bummer. However, now that we know the new album is complete then it won't be too long before they're back in action again.

Finally, King Leetch posted a review of a Snowfield gig at the Jug of Ale from 2004, prompting a memorabilia drool here at Lemming Acres that took a couple of bath towels and three full kitchen rolls to soak up, The article is 13 years old at the time of writing, but even at this formative stage in their lives and still possessing a dodgy moniker, Emma Lilley watched them play and ended her piece with a very astute observation:-

Another solid gig from a band with a lot of promise.

I concur.

Here's the small amount of media made available by the band and their satellites for October, including a seizure-inducing short clip of Elliott with blonde hair. Enjoy the eye-candy.
