**UPDATED 28th August 2017 - The interview we were promised still hasn't surfaced, but I'll add that when and if it shows up. I've laid out below the timeline of events, what a weird, weird situation this turned out to be. Virgin Radio, you owe us a new live session by Editors.
"Following on from Ocean Colour Scene's Virgin Radio Takeover from 24th-28th July, our Sunday night headliners, Editors, will be recording a live session to be played in segments throughout next week. A different track from their session will be played out every day starting from Monday 14th August.
Monday - 14th August 2017
August 11th saw a press release (see above) and it read:-
This week of exclusive tracks will also feature ticket giveaways so you can see Editors perform at the Beyond The Tracks finale for free! Tune in with Tim Cocker from 7pm Monday - Thursday to hear the tracks and find out how you can win tickets to the festival. Edith Bowman at Breakfast will also have a pair of tickets to give away every day next week so tune in from 6am!"
Part of this was true. There were indeed ticket giveaways, but it's that first paragraph that causes most of the problems. The way it was worded, "Editors will be recording a live session", inferred that the band hadn't done it yet, but were about to record some music for Virgin Radio that would then be played in installments across 4 days beginning August 14th. Understandably, those of us who obsess over this kind of thing began furiously formulating lists of potential tracks. Maybe we'd get a studio take of Cold, Hallelujah (So Low) or Magazine? Maybe The Pulse or, dare we even dream it, something we hadn't even heard yet? As the kids would say, we had zero chill as we pondered the possibilities.
Then on the 12th and 13th of August respectively Virgin Radio released two excerpts from a video interview with Tom and Jamie East, where Tom discussed writer's block and curating Beyond the Tracks. The anticipation was building, and on Monday night we tuned in to hear track one and also some more of the interview we'd been teased with. This is where things go off script.
What we ended up with were a few seconds of the interview and a track from a session Tom had already recorded, and which had been broadcast in full well over a year ago in May 2016. The first three days of the week continued that theme with the entire 3 song session being repeated, then on Thursday there was A Ton of Love played acoustically by Tom but it's unclear if this was new or a leftover from last year. I contacted Virgin Radio about the interview and they told me that they'd already played segments of it on the Tim Cocker show, but there was no date for the full clip. Very, very odd.
If I had to guess I would say that the interview will be aired nearer the time of their Beyond The Tracks headline show in September. I say this because it seemed like one of the topics discussed in that chat was about the band curating the Sunday night of that festival, and so in retrospect broadcasting the interview a full month in advance would have probably been viewed as bad timing. So for now, here's a link to A Ton of Love as well as the May 2016 session that was replayed this week.
Here's Mr Smith on the Tim Cocker show. There's some chat with Tom, which I believe is an excerpt from a larger interview, and then after 2 hours of sitting waiting it's...its...the run-through of Blood that they recorded over a year ago. Deflated. Still, in the name of consistency here's what was aired tonight.
And here's the original post that contains all the Tim Cocker Red Session from May 2016:-
