Eurockéennes de Belfort 7th July 2017

Better. Than. Southside.

**UPDATED 9th December 2021 - Added Johnny Silver's HDTV rip as bonus material**

No disrespect to Southside Festival, but this set absolutely buried that one. I'd love to think that all it took was removing all the daylight to end up with a performance like this, but I'm sure there's more to it than that. Maybe...

Time restraints mean that the running order is different to the one they played for the Italian Pop Kids in Pistoia last night (Ciao, Italian Pop Kids). Unfortunately, it also means that Life is a Fear, Two Hearted Spider, NSBTW, All the Kings, Nothing, The Pulse all got benched. I missed the return of The Pulse, dammit! I hope you folks that attended the Pistoia show appreciated what you got. I'm simultaneously thrilled for you and possessed by horrible, gloomy envy at the same time. And if you want some salt rubbed into that open wound...
Maccum posted a picture of the setlist for this show, and if you compare that one with the actual running order then you'll notice that The Pulse was due to be played but didn't make it. We were this close to hearing it again (puts fingers very close together).

This was the beginning of another exciting part of the Editors story, where we went from having never heard Cold, Hallelujah and Magazine to finally being able to compare different live versions. It was only the second time that most of us had a chance to digest the 3 new numbers outside of the fan-footage that had been made available, but even then you could hear little differences. Some of it is probably down to the way it's all been mixed, but there may have been some tinkering on the part of the band themselves in the way they played them. One thing is for sure on the night, King Leetch's bass is the boss. Way up in the mix and making eardrums shake. Nice!

Of course, having potential access to as yet unreleased material meant that there was a problem being created if you were a hardcore Editors fan. The more you listened to the live versions, the more imprinted they became on your memory and the weirder it would seem when you finally heard the studio takes. But there was no need to panic, because there was always another option. You could always be a total purist and just ignore these recordings altogether, waiting like a monk with cotton wool in your ears for E6 to drop.

Ah ha ha ha haaaaaaaaa!

It cracks me up to even write that down. It's a certainty that if you're reading this then you're already a lost cause. Yay! Enjoy the music ;)

Bonus Material - Johhny Silver's HDTV Rip
This is a video that was contributed by a new friend to the Archive Johnny Silver, sourced from HDTV instead of the live webcast. It's always inportant to me that I make sure we have the best quality possible when we're preserving the band's history, so I'm very grateful for the share.
