Exit Festival 8th July 2011

Up next is a television broadcast of the Serbian Exit festival, which was held at Petrovaradin Fortress in the city of Novi Sad on July 8th 2011. I cannot fully express the glee it brings me to know that a band so renowned for their cheerfully, upbeat swagger and sunshine-laced music did a show in a city called Novi Sad. It's too damn perfect. It also makes me extremely proud to know that there are fans of the band in Serbia, which is beyond awesome. Hello to you folks over there ;)

Mr Smith was on a tear for this show. Here are some of the highlights to watch out for:-
  • Sitting down during Bones when they revert to the original "Retreats" that went missing in the AEHAS studio take.
  • A truly majestic delivery of Camera.
  • Baiting the crowd during Smokers.
  • His stare across the keyboard banks just after the second verse of In This Light and On This Evening
  • The crowd baiting at the beginning of Papillon and the fall onto his back at the end of it.
  • The casual way he abandons some of the lyrics mid-song on a couple of occasions.
  • The finale of Fingers. Hot damn!
It would be remiss of me not to draw your attention to song number 5 on the setlist. If you're a frequent lurker here at the Archive then you already know all about Two Hearted Spider and it's complicated birth. One thing I have noticed from taking another look at old footage and audio from the time they were first introducing it into the setlist, are all the minute alternatives between them. Sometimes it was Tom's vocals and which parts of the song he chose to accentuate (see the "Hey's" just after the "I saw our shadows dance" refrain). Often, the lyrics alternated between "I'm just a fucking mess for you" and "I'm just a mess for you". On this one, Chris' lead guitar is played differently at the start with each note being purposefully deadened with his fingers as opposed to being allowed to fully ring out. It means that he's much more quiet until later into the track.  Sometimes the song is played a little faster and others not so much, so there's always a sense that this was still not quite a fully formed entity.

The chameleon that is No Sound But The Wind is as close to the full electric band rendition here as they ever did as Editors mk1. If you like the song then there's every likelihood that you've got your own particular take that you hold dear to your heart. The full electric version is mine, although the one that ended up on the VI OLENCE album is a very, very close second.

What impressed me the most watching this again 8 years after the event, was the sense that nothing was being held back and that and perceived exhaustion at the end of the set was completely genuine. That and the sight of a very large Serbian crowd all going nuts at once make this a justifiable bit of reminiscence. Sad reminiscence, of course. Enjoy the music ;)
